A Dog’s Guide to Tubing the New River Near Boone, NC
By Daisy, Weekend Mascot at Wahoo’s Adventures
If we haven’t met yet, my name is Daisy.
I’m the Weekend Mascot here at Wahoo’s Adventures, and while I don’t technically have a job description, everyone knows I’m in charge.
You’ll usually find me taking one of my very important naps, poking my head up every now and then to make sure everything is running smoothly, or accepting hugs from visitors. (If someone picks me up and says, “Daisy, give me a hug,” I’ll happily wrap my paws around their arm. It’s kind of my signature move.)
Now, before we go any further, I should probably admit something…
I’m not exactly what you’d call adventurous. Some dogs leap into rivers. Some dogs chase sticks. Some dogs swim for miles. Not me. I’m much more of a professional observer. Someone has to supervise all the excitement.
Dear Dogs: You’re Going to Love Tubing the New River
Around here, humans call it dog-friendly tubing near Boone, NC. I just call it the best day ever. If your humans are planning a vacation in the Blue Ridge Mountains or the High Country of North Carolina, make sure they don’t leave you behind. Adventures are always better when the whole pack comes along.
Every weekend I watch dogs arrive with their families for a day of New River tubing. Some of you are absolutely wild. You jump out of the car. You wag your tail at everyone. You bark because…well…apparently everything deserves barking at. Personally, I don’t understand all that excitement. A little dignity goes a long way.
Still, I have to admit—you all seem to have an incredible time. Some dogs happily ride in tubes beside their humans, soaking up the sunshine. Others jump in the cool water whenever they get the chance. And then there are the overachievers. You know who you are. The dogs that decide swimming the entire tubing trip sounds like a great idea.
Honestly? That’s a lot of work. I’ll be over here saving my energy.

The Best Part? Nobody Gets Left Behind
One thing I hear humans say all the time is how happy they are they don’t have to leave their furry family member at home.
I couldn’t agree more. Dogs aren’t just pets. We’re family.
Watching dogs float beside their people, cool off in the river, or simply enjoy a lazy float is one of my favorite parts of every weekend. That’s what makes pet-friendly tubing so special. Everybody gets outside. Everybody relaxes. Everybody goes home tired. That’s a successful day.
I Don’t Care Much About Other Dogs…
I’ll let you in on a little secret. I’m not overly interested in meeting every dog that walks through the outpost. Some of you have…
…let’s call it…
…a lot of opinions.
Personally, I prefer quietly supervising the operation. Now people? Especially people carrying sandwiches? That’s a different story. Those are my favorite visitors.
I always recommend keeping a close eye on anyone carrying snacks. Purely for quality control purposes, of course.
Humans Love This Place Too
I’ve overheard enough conversations to know why families return year after year. They love that the shuttle ride is short. They love finishing their tubing trip right back where they parked. No waiting around for another shuttle. No standing beside the road wondering when someone is coming. Just walk off the river and you’re back at your car.
Humans also love bringing a picnic lunch. Some eat before tubing. Some float once, enjoy lunch by the river, then head back for another float because Wahoo’s offers unlimited all-day tubing.
Personally? I vote for more picnic time. I’ve watched Scouts, church groups, sports teams, schools, family reunions, and vacationing families return year after year.
By the time they leave, it feels like they’ve been visiting old friends. If your humans are wondering why so many people keep coming back, tell them to read: Reasons Families Love Tubing the New River Near Boone
There Are SO Many Wonderful Smells
Dogs… You are going to LOVE the smells. Fresh mountain air. Cool river water. Wildflowers. Trees. Camp lunches. Sunscreen. Wet towels. A suspicious number of potato chips. It’s basically an all-you-can-sniff buffet.
My Favorite Thing About the New River
Even though I usually stay nice and dry, I understand why everyone loves the river. It slows people down. Humans stop staring at little glowing rectangles. Parents laugh with their kids. Friends actually talk to each other. Families notice the beauty all around them. Some even spot wildlife like:
- River otters
- Trout
- Smallmouth bass
- White-tailed deer
- Great blue herons
- Hawks soaring overhead
- And if you’re especially lucky…a rare Hellbender (Eastern Salamander).
Every trip is a little different. One day you might watch a heron glide silently over the river. Another day you may see a deer along the shoreline.
Me? I’m mostly watching to see if somebody accidentally drops a hot dog.
Dear Humans…Daisy Has a Few Suggestions
Since I’ve supervised thousands of happy guests, I have a few recommendations.
- Bring fresh water for your dog.
- A dog life jacket is always a smart idea if your pup enjoys swimming.
- Bring treats.
(Actually…bring extra treats.) - Pack a towel for the ride home.
- Let your dog explore all the wonderful smells around the outpost before and after tubing.
- Most importantly… Slow down.
The New River has been flowing for millions of years. It isn’t going anywhere today.
Daisy’s Official Rules for Visiting Wahoo’s Adventures
Rule #1
Be nice to the humans. They’re carrying the snacks.
Rule #2
Stay on your leash while you’re at the outpost. Good manners make everyone feel welcome.
Rule #3
Shake off BEFORE getting back in the car. Trust me. Your humans will thank you.
Rule #4
Take time to relax. You don’t have to chase every stick. Or bark at every squirrel. Sometimes the best adventure is simply floating one of the oldest rivers in the world with the people you love.
Rule #5
Never ignore someone carrying a sandwich. This rule speaks for itself.
Until Next Time…
Whether you’re the adventurous type who swims the whole river… Or you’re more like me and prefer supervising from a comfortable shady spot… I hope your humans bring you to Wahoo’s Adventures. Because the New River isn’t just another place to go tubing. It’s a place where families laugh more.
Kids forget about their phones. Dogs get to be part of the adventure. And everyone leaves happier than when they arrived. I’ll be waiting at the outpost. Probably napping. Definitely supervising. And if you’re carrying a sandwich… I’ll know.
